a 14-YEAR-OLD girl who was "the sunshine and laughter in everyone's lives" died of a rare heart condition, an inquest heard.
Jade Greenslade, who was diabetic, was admitted to Peterborough District Hospital after she fell ill on November 12 last year.
She had a weak pulse, cold hands and feet and felt clammy and received treatment for diabetes.
But as the day went on, Jade started deteriorating rapidly and at 10.05pm she had a severe heart attack and died.
Consultant pathologist Dr Flora Jessop from Addenbrooke's Hospital told the inquest in Peterborough yesterday that Jade died from acute inflammation of the heart, called myocarditis, which was was caused by a virus. However, the virus was undetectable in the post mortem.
Dr Jessop said: "It can be a very sudden illness. From reading literature, about 50 per cent of the time, the virus which has caused the condition is never found."
Dr Michael Burch, from Great Ormond Street Hospital, who investigated Jade's death, said: "It was most clear that the doctors made a mistake in not finding the problem, but this is a mistake they would have made in similar circumstances.
"But even if they detected the condition, there would not have been enough time to get Jade to a specialist hospital for mechanical support."
The inquest heard that if Jade hadn't suffered with diabetes, doctors would have picked up on the heart condition much more quickly.
However Dr Burch said: "Because it was progressing rapidly, I think it was unlikely that she would have survived."
About 20 to 30 children suffer from the condition each year in England and Ireland and two thirds of them survive.
If Jade had been taken to a hospital which holds the relevant equipment, she would have been kept on a heart machine while the virus disappeared from her system.
Dr Burch said that as so few people are affected with the condition, there are only two hospitals in the country that have the right equipment – Great Ormond Street in London and Freeman Hospital in Newcastle.
Speaking last year after Jade's death, her mother Debbie Stanjko said: "She was a beautiful, unique, dignified, caring, loving and sensitive young lady, whom we were all blessed to know and
love."
Coroner Gordon Ryall recorded a verdict of death by natural causes. jade live with her mother and stepfather, Steven, sister Katie, 16, and stepsisters Zoe, 16, and Jamie, 21. Her father, Keith, lives with Jade's stepmother Beverley Leeburn and third stepsister Tara, 16, in West Road, Oakham Jade Greenslade, who was diabetic, was admitted to Peterborough District Hospital after she fell ill on November 12 last year.

I wear a pair of shoes
They are ugly shoes
Uncomfortable shoes
I hate my shoes
Each day I wear them and each day I wish I had another pair.
Some days my shoes hurt so bad that I do not think I can take another step
Yet, I continue to wear them
I get funny looks wearing these shoes
They are looks of sympathy.
I can tell in others eyes that they are glad they are my shoes and not their's
They never talk about my shoes
To learn how awful my shoes are might make them uncomfortable.
To truly understand these shoes you must walk in them.
But, once you put them on, you can never take them off.
I now realize I am not the only one who wears these shoes.
There are many pairs in this world.
Some women are like me and ache daily as they try and walk in them.
Some have learned how to walk in them so they don't hurt quite as much.
Some have worn the shoes so long that days will go by before they think about how much they hurt
No woman deserves to wear these shoes
They have made me who I am.
I will forever walk in the shoes of a woman who has lost a child
It is si hard to try to understand and accept that our loved ones have been taken from us when there is so much left to do so much left unsaid, They say time heals all wounds but the wounds of the soul never heal.
Thinking of you sweet Jade sleep peacefully angel.
My 17 y/o son also passed away from this
I am so sorry on Sept 23, 2006 after 11 hours my only son passed away of this condition, I know how it felt to have a result of NATURAL CAUSE death, how can this happen?? My son didn't have diabetes and I believe this may have had little to do with her passing. My son had been sick (flu like) was taken to his pediatrition on Wed. Took him to 3 hospitals within 11 hours and my son was left to die. This is a rare but fatel illness and one life is to many. I found out after investigating this : Pericarditis is a swelling and irritation of the pericardium, the thin sac-like membrane that surrounds your heart. Pericarditis often causes chest pain and sometimes other symptoms. Pericarditis may be acute or chronic. The sharp chest pain associated with acute pericarditis occurs when the pericardium rubs against the heart's outer layer. Many of the symptoms of pericarditis are similar to those of other heart and lung conditions. The sooner you are evaluated, the sooner you can receive proper diagnosis and treatment. For example, although the cause of acute chest pain may be pericarditis, the cause could also be a heart attack or a blood clot of the lungs (pulmonary embolus). Under normal circumstances, the two-layered pericardial sac that surrounds your heart contains a small amount of lubricating fluid. In pericarditis the sac becomes inflamed and the resulting friction from the inflamed sac rubbing against the outer layer of your heart leads to chest pain.
In some cases the amount of fluid contained in the pericardial sac may increase, causing what is called pericardial effusion.
The cause of pericarditis is often hard to determine. In most cases doctors are either unable to determine a cause (idiopathic) or suspect a viral infection.
Sometimes, people with myocarditis will also develop pericarditis, which is an inflammation of the membrane covering the heart (pericardium). Pericarditis may cause sharp pains over the center of your chest.
Certain medications. Some medications can cause pericarditis, although this is unusual.
After lossing my son and not understanding how this could have happened I have looked for answers, answers that still make no sence when it comes to losing my beautiful son.
My heart goes out to Jades family the absence of a child is unexplainable.
Jade I will have you close to my heart , I hope you get to my my boy he is special.
God bless
My brother Edward Gleeson had diabetes and went into hospital just before Christmas 2007. He died days after suffering a cardiac arrest... The shock and pain is indescribable...
My thoughts and prayers are with all of Jade's family and friends. God Bless you all.
